Churchill

CHURCHILL follows Britain’s iconic Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the days before the infamous D-Day landings in June 1944. As allied forces stand on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe, they await Churchill’s decision on whether the invasion will actually move ahead.

Fearful of repeating his mistakes from World War I on the beaches of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with fulfilling historical greatness, Churchill is also faced with constant criticism from his political opponents; General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery.

Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse and help lead him to greatness.

CHURCHILL is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man, Marcella) from an original screenplay by British historian Alex von Tunzelmann (Medici: Masters of Florence) in her feature debut.

Starring Brian Cox (War & Peace, Coriolanus) as the legendary Winston Churchill, Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter, The Crying Game) as the Prime Minister’s wife and confident Clemmie, John Slattery (Spotlight, Mad Men) as General Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied D-Day operations, and Julian Wadham (The Iron Lady, War Horse) as British military commander Field Marshal Montgomery.

Portchester Youth Theatre Presents

Spooked The Musical

Book and Lyrics by David Bell. Music by Henry Marsh.

An exciting production by the Portchester Youth Theatre and School of Performing Arts.

Living in a crumbling New York mansion with his uncles and a cellar full of slightly unusual inhabitants, our Spooky friend’s life is rudely interrupted by the arrival of a pair of unscrupulous property developers.

Meanwhile, the hapless Donald and Daisy have enlisted a group of eccentric Spookinators to zap and eliminate our oblivious spooks.

The battle for possession of the property between its ghostly inhabitants and those intent on displacing them makes for a very funny, highly spectacular and spooky musical, which can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages.

It will certainly provide a boost to your spirits.

Elaine Delmar has long been considered one of Britain’s finest singers with a voice and personality that have won audiences the world over. Having appeared on radio, television, concert halls, jazz clubs and theatres both in London’s West End and Broadway, Elaine’s experience is wide and diverse.

She featured in the Ken Russell film “Mahler” and the National Theatre production of David Hare’s play “Map of the World” Elaine is renowned for her classic interpretations of the Great American Songwriters such as Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Rodgers and Hart. She builds each performance with surefooted musicianship always imbued with the “Spirit of jazz”. Proud to have been awarded the prestigious 2013 All Parliamentary Special Award for Jazz ,she also received great acclaim for her appearance at the BBC Albert Hall Promenade Concert of 2015

Hayling Island Amateur Dramatic Society presents:

The Madness of George III

by Alan Bennett

directed by Vicky Fox

In this sensational drama (originally performed by the Royal National Theatre) George III becomes increasingly erratic after losing the American colonies until doctors are brought in to cure his madness. All of them are eminently respectable quacks and one is in the employ of the Prince to Wales, a man with a strong motive for easing the king further into madness. The only hope of avoiding a constitutional crisis lies in the hands of a lowly country doctor. Nigel Hawthorne starred at London's National Theatre, on Broadway and film as mad King George.

Reviews of the orginal production: "Absolutely engrossing." - New York Post. "A richly amusing evening of high office politics with plenty of contemporary resonances." - Daily Express. "What Mr. Bennett achieves with a consummate sense of theatre is in making this remote, ambiguous monarch character totally accessible to a modern audience, at once a fascinating figure of both tragedy and heroism." - The Daily Mail.

This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD.

Acoustic Club

Acoustic goodness with the trio!

“Sensational harmonies”

DiElle’s acoustic show with John Gleadall and Chris Wood is an honest celebration of the joys of acoustic music. Indulging in acoustic hit songs through the ages, the show includes songs from classic songwriters such as the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, The Beatles and The Hollies, and the next generation of artists they have influenced such as Crowded House and Snow Patrol.

DiElle will also launch her new album ‘Together’ at this show, and perform selected original tracks from this new album.

The three musicians met after each having a varied career of many years, taking them from stadium tours, to Hollywood to London’s West End with various projects. John, Chris and DiElle met on the local music scene in Hampshire, and enjoy playing music festivals, arts centres, theatres, and local TV and radio, as well as playing further afield, enjoying a tour to Switzerland last year.

With a deep love of the craft of song, the artists also feature a section on Bob Dylan, celebrating the wealth of music he has created in his time. John Gleadall is nothing short of a local legend, having a long and varied career, including playing with The Crooners for 30 years. John is currently co-writing musicals with poet and playwright Greg Mosse. Having been Billy Ocean’s Musical Director at the age of 19, bassist Chris Wood, son of jazz trumpeter Vic Wood, has versatile and exquisite musicianship with an ear for detail. Singer-songwriter DiElle has been described as having “a voice that could bring a tear to the eye of even the most stone hearted souls”, and is currently composing for Hollywood film companies.

The group have been described as having “Sensational harmonies” by events executive John Sackett, and pride themselves on close harmony singing, and traditional acoustic guitar sound.

This upbeat, fun trio is not to be missed if you love good songs and acoustic music.
